Product Care
Leather is a natural material that ages beautifully and will become darker and/or more burnished in areas that have contact with the user’s skin. These characteristics will even vary based on the individual’s skin type and environment.
Our bags are carefully handcrafted to last a lifetime, always with top grain leather and most often with natural full grain leathers. We love how these leathers can withstand the test of time, developing a unique patina and character through the years. That’s why no product escapes the meticulous eyes of skilled artisans in our factories in the US and Dominican Republic – we design and build making no compromises in the quality of our materials or workmanship. Our mission is to create products that will last you a lifetime.
As with any such worthy investment, a little TLC doesn’t hurt in setting up your bag for success by nourishing its leather, and, when necessary, providing some cleaning. Follow along as we share tips to keep your bag in its best shape.
Leather Care Motto 1: Prevent to Protect
The best time to treat leather is at the time of purchase. Pretreatment is important if you want to minimize staining, drying, and cracking.
Leather Care Motto 2: Treat Wounds Right Away
Speed is everything in removing stains from leather. They don’t have to become permanent if fought off quickly.
Leather Care Specifics: Cleaning and Stain Removal
There are many different types and brands of leather care products on the market, but we’re most fond of our own Korchmar formula, available on our website here. We also like Apple Leather Care's Cleaner and Conditioner. Both perform well and won’t stain or alter the natural look or color of finished top grain or natural full grain leathers. Please note that these products are not to be used on suede or nubuck leather. These products are lanolin based, free of wax, caustic chemicals, and animal fats. This means they don’t leave surface buildup while nourishing the leather naturally, allowing it to breathe and prolong its life and resistance to the elements.
When liquids attack, wipe off wet spots immediately using a soft terry cloth towel. Once the leather dries, apply the cleaner and/or conditioner.
Minor stains can be cleaned and diluted with mild detergent and a terry cloth towel. Finish up with a few coats of conditioner.
For serious stains, such as those caused by salt, apply the cleaner to the spot until the white line disappears completely. Follow through with several coats of conditioner to replace the oils that have been taken out.
